Castell’in Villa
Il toponimo è legato a una realtà insediativa non chiara. Probabilmente si trattava in origine di un semplice villaggio. Il piccolo borgo viene comunque citato con il nome di “Castello in Villa” dalle fonti sin dalla seconda metà del XII secolo.
L’agglomerato, di cui un alto torrione quadrato in pietra e una chiesetta a navata unica costituiscono il nucleo più antico, venne eretto al centro della zona un tempo feudo dell’antica famiglia dei Berardenghi.
Il cassero e l’edificio religioso si ergono sul poggio e probabilmente un tempo erano circondati da fortificazioni, oggi non più visibili. Alla chiesa venne aggiunta in tempi antichi anche una canonica di una certa rilevanza, registrata come suffraganea della Pieve di Pacina. La chiesa antica è quella di San Cristoforo a poca distanza dalla torre in posizione nord est: essa è un rimontaggio di quella richiamata nel 1176 “intus claustrum ecclesie Castelli in Villa”, all’inizio del XIV secolo titolata a S.Giacomo e Cristoforo.
I principi Riccardo e Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa, dopo aver restaurato il castello, hanno trasformato in vigneti specializzati una superficie di più di cinquanta ettari. La tenuta, circondata da stupendi boschi secolari e da una splendida oliveta, ospita oggi non solo l’azienda vinicola ma anche un agriturismo e un ristorante.

The name of the place is linked to a settlement of unclear origin; probably a simple village. The little burg is in any case mentioned in sources with the name “Castello in Villa” from the second half of the 12th century.
The group of buildings, of which a tall square stone defensive tower and a small single-nave church are the oldest nucleus, stood in the middle of an area that was once the fief of the ancient Berardenghi family. The fortress and the religious building are at the top of the small hill, and were probably once surrounded by fortifications no longer visible today. In ancient times, a fairly large rectory was added to the church, and is documented as having been under the aegis of the Parish of Pacina. The ancient church dedicated to San Cristoforo is a short distance north-east of the tower; the current building is a reassembly of one mentioned in 1176 as “intus claustrum ecclesie Castelli in Villa”, and which at the beginning of the 14th century was dedicated to S.Giacomo and S. Cristoforo.
The Prince and Princess Riccardo and Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa, after having restored the castle, made over 50 hectares of the property into specialized vineyards. The estate, surrounded by stupendous old woods and a splendid olive grove, now hosts not only the winery, but also an agri-tourism and a restaurant.
